At this high-level scan, the editor asks, "Does the work, as a whole, make sense?" A substantive edit looks at structure, sequence, completeness, and clarity of ideas. The editor will ask the author about anything confusing, redundant, out of order, or missing, and suggest alternatives.
The copyeditor performs a line-by-line scan of every sentence, looking for language use and consistency. At this stage the editor also corrects errors of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. This edit is especially important for work that has been translated to English, or written in English by an author with a different first language.
